This is the speech I made during my three minutes before the delegates at the Sixth Congressional District Convention on May 21st, 2016. It’s here for your reference. I’ve made a couple of clarifying notes within [brackets] since some things come across differently in print than they do when spoken.
And again, I am very grateful for the wonderful support that led to my election.
My speech, as it appeared on my script, follows:
Many of you have heard me speak at any number of GOP events from here to Warren County to Lynchburg – and a whole lot of places in between.
If you haven’t, I am Steve “Doc” Troxel
Former chairman of the Lynchburg Republican Committee
A university professor for more than two decades, and
A member of the local board of directors of Central VA Community College
35 years ago next month I married the former Rosana Schmucker [Smucker].
I married her because with a name like Schmucker, she had to be good.
My son – among many other pursuits – works with me in a social media marketing business.
And my daughter is a chiropractor.
With her Doctor of Chiropractic and my Ph.D. when you get us together you have a paradox [pair-o-docs].
For the entire five months of my campaign, I’ve been saying that our job as Republicans is to
Develop quality candidates
Elect those candidates
Support them when they are in office
And hold them accountable to do what they said they would do when we spent all that effort to elect them.
I still believe that.
But as I’ve talked with and listened to Republicans all over the district —– I’ve heard people voice other concerns that I also have – about things that State Central Committee can do something about.
People are tired of dirty politics. They want civility in government and in the Party.
I personally have been lied to, lied about, and stabbed in the back.
– but then I was a unit chair.
But I have talked to people at both ends of the district who want nothing more to do with the GOP because of how they have seen some of us treat others of us.
How can we grow the party if we keep driving people away?
As your representative on State Central I will promote civility within the Party.
People want to know how our Party system works. And they don’t!
I’m an educator. When I realized how much of a problem this was for people, I did something about it.
I started sending weekly emails to you delegates.
These have explained in simple terms how the system works.
When grass roots voters understand the system, they can use it to accomplish what they believe they need to accomplish.
When voters don’t understand the system, the system uses them.
As a member of State Central, I will promote education for our grass roots voters.
And just last week, a black Republican friend of mine wanted to know why people seem to be afraid to run as Republicans any more. My answer is that we have let the Democrats and the media control how our message is presented.
They have taken control of our talking points.
I can list any number of lies that are told about our Party – that the public believes to be true – because we have done such a poor job of controlling our own message.
I taught broadcasting and marketing at the university. I can help the RPV take back control of our message and our image.
I ask you to help me fix these problems by electing me, Nate Boyer, and Joe Sonsmith as your three representatives to the State Central Committee.
Thanks you, for your support.
